Case Studies

PPL deliberately works across policy areas and jurisdictions. We carry knowledge between worlds of expertise, allowing us to develop cross-agency solutions that better serve the public where they are.

For a deep dive into how we conduct projects, explore case studies on selected topics.

Children & Families

Our interest in addressing childhood poverty and trauma has led to multiple efforts to better serve at-risk children and their families.

PPL partnered with the NYC Administration of Children’s Services and the NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene to understand what families need to access the right therapeutic and prevention services, then improve intake and inter-agency referral pathways.

Health & Accessibility

In addition to projects to develop healthcare systems that meet the needs of patients and staff, we have an ongoing focus on improving access to mental-health care.

We introduced human-centered design principles to the US Department of Health & Human Services’ Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, then helped redesign the Medicare Summary Notice, making it more usable and leveraging its ability to empower Americans about their health choices.

Housing & Homelessness

We've conducted multiple projects addressing housing insecurity, which include issues around rent burden, living 'doubled up,' eviction, and homelessness.

Working closely with staff at the NYC Department of Homeless Services and with providers and clients at a dozen homeless shelters, we designed, tested, and evaluated methods to help New Yorkers experiencing homelessness navigate the process of securing permanent housing.

Justice & Violence

We've worked on intimate-partner violence, as well as on ways to improve jailing and divert people from incarceration.

For Louisville Metro Government, we researched links between opioid use and jail overcrowding and designed prototype programs to reduce jailing and improve outcomes of opioid users.

Veterans

We've conducted multiple projects with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to transform services for the nearly 20 million Americans who've served in the military.

For the US Department of Veterans Affairs, we worked with Deloitte to launch the VA’s new design and insight practice, the Veterans Experience Office, and design a set of onboarding tools, now distributed nationally and on Vets.gov.
