A new iPhone application, YouTown, will allow local governments to easily bundle all their published public information for smart-phone users. The app (available now in an early release) lets agencies synthesize their open data feeds, such local maps, news, events, and services, into one portal, as opposed having multiple Twitter feeds, applications, and Facebook pages. And it’s free to use, both for localities and the public.
Founder and CEO Michael Riedyk says that YouTown was developed using a “co-creation innovation process,” partnering with over 25 U.S. cities and counties to develop concepts and receive feedback. Citizens also participated heavily in development; their consultation was part of the process at every step. Local governments interested in adding their feeds should visit the app’s support site and contact the developers for more info.
